Kia Hua Te Whare Māori
Celebrating Successful Māori Housing
Kia Hua Te Whare Māori
A Te Matapihi project aimed to encourage and promote thriving, Māori-led housing solutions, for whānau māori.
The Meaning of ‘Kia hua’ is to flourish, bear fruit, to be abundant or prosperous. There is a well-known tongikura (saying) by Te Puea, “Kia tupu, kia hua, kia puāwai” – grow, flourish, blossom. ‘Te Whare Māori’, the ‘Māori house’, is a metaphor for Māori housing as a whole, and also infers that a Māori house has particular characteristics that sets it apart and makes it unique
Purpose
The project includes both Engagement to promote successful Māori housing across the sector, and the development of Resources to help both whānau and rōpū Māori navigate the many processes across the housing sector.
The purpose of Kia Hua Te Whare Māori is to:
1. Showcase and celebrate the capability of iwi and Māori in the provision of housing by Māori for Māori
2. Promote the growing number of quality, Māori-Led housing solutions which meet the needs of whānau
3. Share the journey at a governance and funding level to give insight into the reality of delivering housing for māori
4. Influence positive change for Māori in the housing space by utilising Te Matapihi’s communication channels to increase awareness of key events and issues affecting the sector.
Kia Tupu te Whare Māori is an extension of Kia Hua te Whare Māori. It is an online database to connect the housing sector and support Māori to navigate the system with confidence.
